The BA (Hons) in Acting and Theatre offers you the opportunity to learn about a wide range of contemporary theatre and performance in a variety of regional, national and international contexts. You will undertake training in vocal and physical skills and develop further skills that will make you a creative actor and collaborator, including ensemble skills, devising and creating work for a variety of settings, playwriting, and understanding how theatre can be used as a tool for change.

You will learn by ‘doing’: the course offers practical training alongside the opportunity to apply theory to practice. Such opportunities happen in a range of contexts including: working in small-scale professional theatre settings, applied theatre (for example, in education or wellbeing settings). Its interdisciplinary focus allows you to acquire further skills and knowledge involved in the creation of performance and theatre, which include use of technology for design and self-promotion purposes. You will receive support from specialist lecturing staff and visiting professionals who will guide you through your training. The course offers lots of opportunities to engage with current, employment-related professional practice, enabling you to enhance your career potential.

As a graduate of this course you will be able to:

Actively and efficiently engage with group and individual processes and demonstrate a sensitive understanding of appropriate vocabularies and working methods.
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of forms, practices, traditions, texts, theories and histories of theatre and performance in their cultural, historical and contemporary contexts.
Analyse and evaluate differing arguments about theatre, drama and performance in a variety of regional, national and international contexts.

During the course, you will explore the inter-relationship between knowledge, understanding and doing, applying these skills to ‘real world’ settings whilst having the chance to work as a semi-independent professional. You will acquire skills that encourage you to work ethically and creatively to develop and produce work for wide-range of diverse audiences and contexts.

The course aims to develop the skills to use new technologies in a range of subject-specific applications: these may include digital self-promotion methods for audition purposes, use of 3D imaging and manipulation technology for theatre design, use of industry-standard software for lighting and set design. The BA (Hons) Acting and Theatre course is vocationally-led and aims to enhance your future employability through engagement with a variety of contexts. It aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration to create and develop theatre in rapidly evolving contexts including: small-scale and site-specific theatre production, applied theatre (in education and wellbeing contexts), and offers the opportunity to work in professional contexts, particularly through a close partnership with the Arena Theatre, based at our City campus. Such partnerships and contexts enhance your employability by allowing you to apply critical thinking, theory and practice in industry-standard contexts.
