Why should I take this course?

The Business Innovation and Applied Management degree is structured to allow you to study to the level of your choice. At the end of each year you have the option to leave with a recognised certificate accredited by the University of Essex.

The Business Innovation and Applied Management course offers a flexible approach to learning. Study on the full-time programme and your lectures will normally run over two days, giving you the option of employment in the remaining week-days.

The School location, close to Colchester’s main railway station, means that Colchester Institute is easily accessible, allowing students to commute from Essex, Suffolk and beyond. Colchester is a lively and student-friendly town with many bars, clubs and entertainments and many students, including those from overseas, choose to live here for the duration of their study. You will also have full access to the University of Essex facilities and student accommodation.

Your classes will be small in size, with typically no more than 20 students in each group. This means that you get personal attention and expert support from experienced tutors.

One of the key differences between our School of Business and Management and other universities is the experience of the lecturing staff. Many of your tutors will be working in business and managerial positions alongside their lecturing duties and so have up-to-date experience of the operational and strategic issues facing managers today. This experience is built in to your degree and means that you will graduate from Colchester Institute ready to make a valuable contribution to your employer, leading to a wide range of job prospects.

What will I learn?

This course will appeal to students who want to gain an understanding of different types of businesses and the environment in which they operate, as well as the practical skills and theoretical knowledge that are needed to manage a successful organisation. The aim of this programme is to train graduates to keep up with strategic and technological advances and maintain a high level of professional practice, while considering business needs and priorities. As well as having a broad basis of knowledge and skills in business management, graduates will learn how to apply their understanding to new challenges and situations, as is required within the current fast-paced industry sector.

The focus on business innovation is not limited to that of digital innovation; there will be an emphasis on the role of innovation in the development of entrepreneurial skills and enterprise initiatives. They will also have an opportunity to develop entrepreneurial skills through specific module and assessment methods which will include business plans and funding applications that will encourage creative thinking and logical planning. The focus on Applied Management will ensure that our graduates gain experience of working with real organisations to understand current industry practice and to solve real and realistic problems. Work-based learning skills will be enhanced through work placements and assessments within programme, together with industry visits and guest speakers from the business environment across all levels of the programme. Students wishing to build links with business and industry will have opportunity to do so through work placements in year 2 and also have the option to do a placement year prior to year 3.

The aim is to provide skills-ready graduates for all types of business sectors and a real-world practitioner viewpoint to the learning. A strategic partnership between Colchester Institute and the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) ensures each of the courses can be dual-accredited, so students will receive an industry recognised qualification alongside their academic degree, in addition to being able to access the resources of the CMI.
