Course programme
You’ll examine the history of circus in relation to other performance, such as theatre and dance, and consider the processes and practitioners that inform a contemporary approach to performance making in broad terms, especially circus.
We’ll help you develop your physical skills and performance skills to professional pitch and engage you with the ideas and concepts of physical performance, and creative process of making work.
We’ll enable you to synthesise and apply your learning to date at a deeper level. You’ll create a portfolio of work that has particular professional markets in mind and you’ll critically evaluate your work within this context. You’ll be immersed in a professional environment where you work on a production that goes outside of the school and prepares you for life in the professional world.
We emphasize the processes of making work over the end product and holistically integrate your technical training and conditioning practice. For your final dissertation project, we challenge you to make a major piece of work for performance, document the process, write an extended critical commentary of the work and speak about this in a viva.
Course assessmentAssessment methods may include:
- Performances;
- Written coursework, such as essays and critical commentaries; and
- Oral presentations (vivas).
