BA (Hons) Education Studies (Top-up) Overview

This flexible honours level programme will allow you to link your study to professional practice, enhancing your employability and career prospects.

As befitting a high level of study, one of the core modules (40 Credits) requires you to engage in an independent project based around your individual vocational situation or educational interest.

This course is validated by the University of Derby.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to interview to discuss qualifications, experience and any other related issues.

To start this course you will be expected to have successfully completed a minimum of one of the following:

  • At least 240 credits on a relevant foundation degree with a merit profile or equivalent.
  • At least 240 credits on a relevant HND, with a merit profile
  • Other relevant Level 5 qualification (normally 240 credits at merit grade, or equivalent).

We normally also require three GCSEs at grade C or above, to include English language and maths: English and maths at Level 2 are essential requirements.

Please note that maths at Level 2 is required for progression onto the BA (Hons) Education Studies Top-up award or other programme.

Provisional timetables will be discussed at interview, and confirmed in the final joining instructions which all students will receive in July.

This course is studied over one year.

Students will normally attend 8 hours over an afternoon and evening per week, with occasional additional evening sessions.

We recommend that you undertake a study placement if you are not employed in an appropriate setting (you would be responsible for finding this placement but we would support you if you experienced difficulties in this).

You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and study outside the classroom.

How will I be assessed?

There is significant emphasis on assessment through coursework, as the programme requires students to explain and evaluate theoretical issues in the field of education and to apply their critical understanding of such issues in appropriate workplace settings. Assessment methods include presentations, essays and a dissertation.

What does the course lead to?

A degree in education studies allows you to keep your options open. Successful completion of the degree will provide you with the opportunity to follow a number of career pathways. The course can open up different routes into teaching and teaching assistant roles as well as positions in museums organising educational programmes, social and educational research, educational administration, educational publishing, as well as careers in the commercial or public sector.

What will I study?

You will study the following modules:

  • Educational Independent Study (40 credits)
  • Learning and Motivation
  • Curriculum, Corruption and Construction
  • Understanding and Managing the Behaviours of Learners
  • Mentoring in Education and Lifelong Learning

All modules are worth 20 credits unless otherwise stated.

What can I go on to study?
  • Upon successful completion of the course, you could further your education by studying a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate of Education) or a MEd (Master of Education), subject to entry requirements.
  • Alternatively, you may consider a number of career pathways in the private, public or voluntary sectors including teaching and teaching assistant roles, working in museums, organising educational programmes, social and education research, educational administration and educational publishing. This list is not exhaustive.
