BA (Hons) English Literature and Criminology

Subjects covered Level 4 (Year 1: September – April) The aim of the Level 4 programme is to give all students a thorough grounding in a both Criminology and English Literature. Typical topics studied include. • The novel genre: Narrative, culture and historical context • Poetic Language • Introduction to Critical Theory • Introduction to the Renaissance • Introduction to Criminology • Criminological Theories • Criminal Justice • Understanding Crime You will also benefit from a course in academic skills for degree students. Level 5 (April in Year 1 – December in Year 2) Level 5 of the programme offers students the opportunity to develop their skills in more depth in a range of topics. Options are chosen from the following: • Shakespeare • Romantics • The Modern World: the long th century • Research Methods for English Studies • Victimology • Types and Trends of Crime • Diversity and Crime • Social Research Methods. Level 6 (January in Year 2 to June in Year 2) In the final Level of study students have further opportunity to specialise in their chosen area. For example: • Th Century Literature I • Gender and literature • Th Century Literature II – the present • Crime Prevention • Critical Issues in Criminology In addition to taught modules a dissertation will allow students to conduct research and investigate a topic in greater depth. The style of teaching and learning used in this programme has been carefully designed to suit the subject matter. We recognise that students learn in various ways, so we use a range of different teaching methods and situations to best deliver the learning outcomes for each module. The range of teaching and learning methods used in this programme includes: • Lecture based presentations • Individual and group project work • Individual presentations • Group and individual tutorials • Case studies • Classroom activities promoting interaction at peer and tutor level Assessment A wide range of assessment methods are used in this programme, which have been chosen to suit the subject material being taught. The range of assessment methods you will experience will give you the confidence and capability to complete an Honours degree and progress further in your career. Your Tutor will be on hand to provide support during the assessment process and discuss any queries you may have. Studying English Literature is a great foundation for a career with many different employers. Public and private sector organisations such as the National Health Service (NHS), educational institutions, local and national government, financial and legal firms, and voluntary and charitable organisations employ English graduates in a range of roles, including: • Administration • Research • Finance • General Management Other typical employers include: • Publishing Companies • Advertising Marketing And Public Relations Agencies • Media Organisations The retail, leisure and tourism sectors also typically recruit English graduates With their critical thinking, analytical and communications skills, criminology graduates are attractive to employers both inside and outside the criminal justice sector. Major employers include central and local government, the police and prison services, the court services, security services, and other non-profit-making organisations, including the NHS, educational institutions and charities that work with young offenders or victims of crime. Opportunities also exist in the private sector, for example in private security and in law practices. Criminology graduates also work in a range of social welfare posts, such as mental health support and drug rehabilitation, housing (as housing officers or in outreach support roles), as homelessness officers, and in refugee and victim support/counselling.
