This course provides a high standard of training and subject knowledge for those who wish to take up a teaching post in the secondary school sector teaching English. It will give you both the English knowledge at degree level and ensure that those who are successful will be recommended for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) - the professional award required by all those who wish to teach in a maintained secondary school. You will undertake both English modules at our Wolverhampton campus and periods of education-based learning at the Walsall Campus.. You will also spend at least 120 days divided between a range of different schools at different times during the three year course. As a trainee you will learn how to teach English to pupils in the 11-16 age range within the secondary age phase, with additional primary and post-16 enhancements.

The English element of the degree covers all the major periods and literary movements such as Shakespeare and Victorian Literature, but also Wolverhampton’s distinctive specialisms such as Making A Scene: Plays in Performance which teaches acting, directing and producing drama.  The course also contains a module in English Language/Linguistics in each year of the 3-year programme, so you will be experienced in both dimensions of the academic discipline.

During the three years, you will share many classes with students enrolled on the BA (Hons) English programme that achieved 100% overall satisfaction rating in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 National Student Surveys.

About this course

Students of English and Secondary Education with QTS take 3 modules per semester in the first year, a mix English and Education: approximately 12 hours of contact time, plus private study.

Modules split between lectures, seminars and workshops, plus individual tutorial support and Learning Labs to help deepen your academic skills.

You will also have 6 days in school in the first semester: in the second year you’ll do 50 days in school and in your final year, 70 days, supported by staff in the Education Department who will help you find a placement and offer one-to-one support as you develop your teaching skills. With a longer teaching term than most degree courses, you won’t have to do an extra postgraduate year to get your teaching qualification.

Students will also have the opportunity to go on theatre trip, contribute to Wolverhampton Literature Festival and other events the department organises, and to attend Public Lectures, Career Development Week activities and a range of other cultural events we put on throughout the year.
