BA (Hons) Music taught at Wolverhampton has a strong focus on practical performance-based work, enabling you to create and recreate music in equal measure. You will perform in a range of ensembles as well as in smaller instrumental popular music and contemporary performing groups; these are renowned features of the course and we have significant feedback from former students testifying to the quality of experience gained.

With a clear emphasis on making, understanding, shaping and experiencing music you can expect to study composition in a range of styles from Western Art music to song writing, and perform in different ensembles as well as develop your own technique as an instrumentalist and solo performer. We are very proud of our excellent, well-established team of visiting musicians, who contribute to the programme.

We consider the challenges you face as a learner in the 21st century and provide the opportunity to acquire a broad range of associated skills that will enhance your musicianship and employability, including: sound design, working in the community, music for media, and music therapy. All of these skills will be brought together in professional development modules, which will help you to identify and follow your chosen career. The course is designed to allow you to work collaboratively, experiencing music in a wide variety of contexts and cultures. You will meet interesting people and make long-lasting musical friendships and the course will broaden your horizons for lifelong learning.

About this course

The BA (Hons) Music degree at the University of Wolverhampton aims to develop your musical creativity, and help you to acquire the skills needed to become a versatile and practical musician. This course stimulates your innate love of music, explores and identifies what music is, what music does, and what music means and provides a structured approach to your career progression as a performer, composer, technologist, teacher or academic.

You will experience practical modules designed to enhance your natural musical skills and ability. The latest music technologies will help you to discover your creativity and will enable you to express it and disseminate it more widely. In addition, research and analysis modules will enable you to understand musical structures and will stimulate academic discussion and debate as well as developing your communication skills through essays, presentations and electronic media.

This module aims to develop the rounded and varied skills that are needed in the modern music graduate. It combines academic study and the development of academic skills in music (such as critical thinking, editing, transcription and realisation) with an understanding of the role of music in contemporary culture. Students will be asked to attend concerts and workshops throughout the West Midlands and to engage with performers and artists in order to make the essential connections required for their future career. This is a developmental module as much as a skills-based one. It will help students to explore their creativity, develop a personal voice and to explore music from a historical and cultural perspective. The module will be taught via a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, visits and practical activities.

This module explores the community and therapeutic settings in which musicians work. You will learn about the place of music in a variety of settings such as education and healthcare. You will experience the interrelationships between arts, society, community and music therapy. This module is about understanding both the types of community where music might be used therapeutically and the underpinnings of running a creative and ethical community music or therapeutic project.

In this module you will explore a range of performance strategies and styles in order to develop creative and collaborative interdisciplinary skills. The module combines performance practice and the development of academic skills (such as critical thinking, discussion, interpretation and analysis) with an understanding of the role of the performer in a collaborative production. This module culminates in a performance for a public venue or digital platform. The production will be tutor-led, though not necessarily tutor-directed. Performance material will be selected by the module lecturers and will be responsive to changing social, and cultural contexts. The production may be developed for a large ensemble or several small ensembles and may be performed in a theatre, on film or across a range of non- conventional venues.

You will engage with a wide variety of methods to help you interpret texts and realise their potential for developing creative and innovative designs.

This module develops your understanding of the history of the musical, and explores how that history gets told. We will think about who gets to be part of the story and ask if the story needs changing. We consider the contributions of many groups who have developed the form we know today: we explore the work of key Black, Jewish, women and LGBTQ+ creative practitioners whose work has sometimes been overlooked in histories of the form. We interpret the cultural and social contexts that shape these processes, through practical workshops and seminar discussions. We will explore how the history of the musical might shape its future. The module will improve your knowledge of repertoire (songs and practices) and musicals.

This module provides a practical overview of live sound and lighting for performance. It covers the fundamentals of live sound engineering, including an understanding of the components of a live sound system and how they can best be set up and operated for a live gig. The module will also prepare you to design and operate a lighting rig, with the opportunity to set up and run a variety of equipment.

In this module you will learn the basics of studio recording you will learn the tools and techniques to be able to take an appropriate role in a variety of recording and production scenarios. Using the University recording studios you will learn the fundamental concepts of studio practice, including the basic operation of mixing consoles. Further study will include learning about microphones and their placement and how to record different instruments in the studio including percussion, guitars, bass, piano and vocals.
