This is a two year course following the OCR syllabus. Students may also enter the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations in Music Theory, and practical examinations of the ABRSM. Students work in classes, ensembles and individually to develop musical knowledge and skills. Topics include the history and theory of music, aural and analytical skills.

About this course

Students should have GCSE in Music at Grade C or above, and/or a pass in ABRSM Practical/Theory at Grade 4 or above. Relevant performance experience will be taken into account.

Music - A and AS Levels

What are the main features of this course?
This is a two year course following the OCR syllabus. Students may also enter the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations in Music Theory, and practical examinations of the ABRSM. Students work in classes, ensembles and individually to develop musical knowledge and skills. Topics include the history and theory of music, aural and analytical skills. Practical and composition work is a particularly important aspect of this course. The Department enjoys strong relationships with the CBSO, the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Birmingham Jazz. Students work with professional musicians on various projects. Students taking this course are entitled to instrumental tuition paid for by the College.

How is the course assessed?
Students are required to complete a folio of composition work, present a short instrumental or vocal recital, and sit written papers on the historical and theoretical topics covered in the course.

Who should study this course?
