BA (Hons) Music Technology

You will have hands-on experience with the latest digital music technologies in our dedicated Mac suites and recording studios, whilst developing an advanced range of music technology skills for the creation and production of sound in a variety of contexts including studio recording and production, using music programming languages, and creating music for multimedia. The course is taught by an experienced and dedicated teaching staff with significant involvement from industry professionals, meaning you will be ready to respond to the technological, academic and artistic innovations within the industry.

The University of Wolverhampton continues to develop state of the art facilities at its Walsall campus to greatly enhance your learning experience. The Performance Hub has a diverse range of fully equipped music teaching, performance and practice rooms (accommodating a single person to a large band/ensemble), two high-end professional recording studios, and two bespoke technology suites running industry standard software including Pro Tools and Logic Pro. Our two recording studios offer the perfect blend of digital and analogue technologies, giving students the opportunity to combine classic analogue recording technique with the flexibility and reliability digital technology provides. As well as a dedicated live room each for recording, for increased flexibility and choice of room acoustic, any of the music rehearsal rooms surrounding each studio can also be patched into the studio’s control room.

As a graduate of this course you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a systematic understanding of key aspects and cutting-edge developments in music technology and show the ability to work in the field of audio production using a variety of established and emerging technologies and techniques.
2. Develop detailed conceptual knowledge and coherent practical skill in creative computing, including the use of audio/music programming languages and interaction elements.
3. Develop critical, analytical and creative skills in research, academic writing and communication, including devising and sustaining arguments and defining and solving problems, and communicate your information, ideas, problems and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
4. Review, consolidate, extend and apply your knowledge and understanding of the needs of both industry and academia; develop your transferable skills, initiative, responsibility and decision-making abilities in order to enhance employability.
5. Devise, negotiate and manage an extended project using appropriate scholarly and vocationally relevant strategies and methodologies in order to bring it to a successful conclusion by an agreed deadline.

Additional Field Trips - £1000 -All Performing Arts students will have an opportunity to partake in the bi-annual trip to New York, costs vary according to cohort size and programme of events but can be expected to be in the order of £800 - £1,000. There will be opportunities to attend Musicals and Theatre performances in London and across the UK, recent examples: Hair, Kinky Boots, Hamilton, Rent

Additional Events/Performances - £250 - Final performances and productions are by individual design as as such costs in this area are difficult to quantify. Potential spend areas: venue hire; props; costumes; choreographers; sets etc

Applicants are required to hold 120 credits at Level 4 (for Year 2 entry) or 120 credits at Level 4 and Level 5 (for Year 3 entry) from either a HNC/HND or a Foundation Degree in a Drama or Acting related subject.

Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development. These applicants will be processed through standard procedures, which may involve an interview as part of the process. Please see for further information.
