The BA (Hons) Musical Theatre course will give you the opportunity to specialise in musical theatre whilst developing practical skills in dance, drama and music. You will have practical modules at all levels of the course to enable you to develop your performance skills. The BA (Hons) Musical Theatre also offers the opportunity to develop a broad range of associated skills including, for example, technical theatre, theatre design, teaching, thus increasing your employability and your understanding of collaborative and professional practices in context.

The course develops academic and practical skills in musical theatre, and looks at historical and contemporary practice. Led by a team of internationally-published academics, you will have the opportunity to critically engage with the history and development of musical theatre practice. In addition, working with our professional regional, national and international networks allow you to expand your knowledge of the musical theatre industry and embed this into your own practice. You will have numerous opportunities at every level to perform in theatres and other professional locations.

About this course

The aim of the BA Musical Theatre course is to produce enterprising students who are capable of independent thought, of working between and across disciplines, and of creative and critical engagement with musical theatre in regional, national and international contexts. During the course, you will explore the interrelationships between knowledge, understanding and doing, and how musical theatre draws on dance, drama and music. You will develop the skills to use new technologies in a range of subject-specific applications, for example, lighting and sound design, digital self-promotion skills, and studio recording. The course is vocationally-led and aims to enhance your future employability. By the end of the course, you will have the know-how to develop further both your professional skills and your powers of critical analysis.

The module is delivered across three weekly sessions, each dedicated to a specific area of practice, where you engage in focused studio practice to allow you to develop and expand your foundational musical theatre skills.

Costume is a fundamental element of performance: it communicates place, time and character. During this module you will design, develop and create a costume design based on a character from a pre-existing source or text. You will develop ideas through the use of a sketch book and learn the fundamentals of costume making, using materials, techniques and processes to produce a costume appropriate for production use.

This module on devising will allow you to explore a range of approaches to creative performance making; you will explore ways to find a starting point, generate performance material, and compose performances. You will learn important skills such as how to collaborate effectively and how to reflect on your work in order to develop it further. The emphasis will be on learning through doing and the module will allow you to work collaboratively to create your own work.

This module develops your understanding of the history of the musical, and explores how that history gets told. We will think about who gets to be part of the story and ask if the story needs changing. We consider the contributions of many groups who have developed the form we know today: we explore the work of key Black, Jewish, women and LGBTQ+ creative practitioners whose work has sometimes been overlooked in histories of the form. We interpret the cultural and social contexts that shape these processes, through practical workshops and seminar discussions. We will explore how the history of the musical might shape its future. The module will improve your knowledge of repertoire (songs and practices) and musicals.

This core module will enable you to develop your skills in special effects make-up. You will become familiar with the materials used, including on-skin silicone, liquid latex and gelatine and learn the intricate processes involved required to make, apply and remove special effects make-up.

This module focuses on developing your understanding of policies and procedures such as the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion in teaching, safeguarding legislation and keeping children and young people safe in education . The module will help you to understand child development so that you can promote positive behaviour or manage challenging and inappropriate behaviour in the classroom. Lesson planning and micro-teaching activities will give you the opportunity to gain some classroom experience through micro-teaching exercises. Reflective tasks and professional discussions will help you to explore how you can develop creativity within your teaching practice and subject discipline.

This module provides a practical overview of live sound and lighting for performance. It covers the fundamentals of live sound engineering, including an understanding of the components of a live sound system and how they can best be set up and operated for a live gig.
