About this course

Year 1 looks at the social groups most likely to be in need of social care services. It offers a comprehensive study of how social care and health services are organised. You will consider a wide range of perspectives on health matters and contrast holistic health frameworks together with perspectives on Social Care and inequalities.

Year 2 combines knowledge with skills and looks at concepts in providing social care services and addressing key determinants of poor health. It examines poverty and social exclusion, and explores the policy and legislation surrounding support services. You will learn to assess the health needs of the population and further explore your research skills and knowledge.

The final year encourages the development of analytical skills to compare the provision and delivery of social care within European states and to further explore quality care and support services. You will also learn to plan and evaluate health promotion, to research population health, and explore global health issues

In the academic and health community there is increasing discussion about variations in the risk of disease and differences in the health experience of individuals with diverse backgrounds. In the last three decades or more, differences in health outcomes and experience by different groups have received more and more attention. This module looks at how health is affected by various social and cultural factors and what is being done to address these challenges so that the health and well being of all groups in society can be improved.

The aim of this module is for students to gain an understanding of the funding, organisation and delivery of social care services in contemporary Britain. Students will need to show an understanding of the state, market and family and their respective roles within the mixed economy of welfare, as well as the purchaser/provider split and its implications for the funding and delivery of social care services. Students will be introduced to key policies and legislation and there will be a focus on core academic skills such as source selection, referencing, paraphrasing and academic writing, with students required to demonstrate their proficiency in each of these areas in order to progress from the module.

Students will gain an understanding of the range of mental health conditions and explore treatment options, service models and positive approaches to promote recovery. The module will draw throughout on service user's experiences, legislation and evidence to further enhance an understanding of mental health and wellbeing. The module is designed to allow flexibility of choice for participants to focus on areas of interest.

This module will consider the key stages of interventions in social care, whether in terms of work with individuals, groups or communities. Practitioners in social care organisations - whether in statutory, private or voluntary sectors - work with different assessment frameworks and methods (including systemic social practice), designed to assess levels of need with a multidisciplinary approach. However, in some way, most will follow the progress of making an assessment and engaging with a service user through care planning processes and delivering appropriate needs led/person centred intervention. Students on completion of this module will be able to identify (1) the skills that are necessary to support these practices, and (2) how these practices can be needs led and /or person-centred.
