Work experience is an essential part of the course and students must be successful and attend regularly in order to achieve the full Diploma. The work experience unit of this course (Reflecting on and Developing Practice for Children aged 0-8) carries its own UCAS points, making it an essential part of the programme. Students will attend a variety of child care settings in order to gain work experience across the age range.

Hours of lesson per week: 17 Indicative group size: 20

How is the course assessed?
The course is delivered through integrated assignments. There are no formal examinations, so continued effort throughout the two years is essential.

Who should study this course?
This course is suitable for students who are interested in a career in the Child Care sector. Students wishing to enrol on this course will need 4 grade C's at GCSE level, one of which must be English Language. Alternatively students may have a BTEC First Diploma in Children's Care Learning and Development or Health and Social Care at Merit grade and Level 2 Communication Key Skills. Mature students are most welcome and should make contact with the college to arrange an appointment to discuss their qualifications and experience. The course requires students to be highly motivated and self-disciplined.

Where can I go next?
Students can gain employment in the field of childcare - i.e. as a classroom assistant, nursery nurse, nanny or progress into Higher Education. This could lead to a career in teaching, nursing and social work. In order to access Teacher Training, students must have GCSE Grade C or above in English, Mathematics and Science.
