The course is designed for students who want to enter professional social work, a profession which engages with people who experience levels of social disadvantage and/or discrimination.

Typically you will want ‘to make a difference’ to help enhance people’s lives at a personal and structural level; to counter discrimination and oppression. The course will equip you with the appropriate knowledge and skills, as well as encouraging and enabling you to explore the value base necessary for qualified social workers. It will also prepare you for 170 days of practice over two placements.

This course will prepare you for social work practice and make you eligible to apply for registration as a professional Social Worker which is mandatory for practice within the UK.

About this course

There are 170 days spent on placement in practice settings for which you complete a portfolio.  There are also skills days to support and prepare you further for placement and practice including up to 5 days of 'shadowing'.

Over the three years of studying this course, you will complete a range of modules from theory based, to practical placement based modules. Below you will see an example of the structure and modules you may study whilst at this university.

The content of the two modules have been designed to complement each other and ensure that a strong readiness for practice base is achieved at level 4. This module will also form a foundation for modules at level 5 in specialist practice areas of children, families and working with adults.

This module aims to introduce you to sociological explanations of the material conditions of service users. It offers you an opportunity to examine factors such as poverty, unemployment, ill health, poor housing, disablement and lack of education and to introduce you to sociological concepts which seek to explain these phenomena, showing how such factors affect human development and behaviour and lead to social inequality.

This module sets out to enable you to develop a critical understanding of social work theory, methods and models as a framework for working with children, adults, families, groups and communities. The module further sets out to enable you to examine a range of social work methods within a wider social, theoretical and policy context. The module seeks to enable you to evaluate the effectiveness of different methods of intervention including your application to care management and social care planning, and to enable you to develop and implement anti-racist and anti-oppressive strategies as an integral part of practice.

The module aims to enable you to develop capability in terms of published Social Work professional standards, to reflect on your actions, and to deepen and expand the knowledge base that supports your practice. Knowledge supporting practice is assessed by University tutors. Developing capability (as defined by professional standards) is assessed by practice educators. You will draw on the understandings of social work practice and values developed at level 4 and level 5. You will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of law and policy as relevant to your placement settings. You will draw on insights from psychology and sociology to understand the situations you encounter and on social work models and methods to intervene effectively. You must pass both components of the module- the academic practice study and the portfolio demonstrating professional capability.

The module will build on your work on sociology from year one and prepare you for your detailed policy work on children and adults in year two. It will equip you with skills for policy analysis and practice engagement that will enhance your capabilities to engage with collaborative working and social work practice in year three. To those ends, it will examine key drivers of social policy and social work practice and discuss how practitioners can utilise policy analysis skills to develop an engaged practice.
