In this module you will engage in theoretical frameworks that inform the design of technical elements of performance. You will interrogate the work of practitioners in the field and then align your own work with that of an established practitioner. You will gain advanced knowledge, understanding and the skills needed to exploit creatively contemporary practice in technical theatre. The purpose of the module is to interrogate and evaluate the aesthetic role of the theatre technician and analyse this within appropriate theoretical frameworks.

This module explores the interdisciplinary nature of live art, installation art, immersive theatre and multi-media performance. Using the notion of Liveness and exploring multi-mediality and inter-mediality in theory and practice this module interrogates the blurring of the boundaries between these forms and their creation, performance and application. The module will also consider the impact of these art forms on the changing nature of audience/spectator reception. It will examine the work of practitioners such as Orlan, Abramovic,Tracy Emin, Michael Landy, Forkbeard Fantasy. The practical elements of the module will approach these art forms as a scenographic medium and as a performance tool.

During this module you will take responsibility for all aspects of the production and performance process to create a festival of new work for a 'non-theatre' venue. The performances will be made in response to the study of a particular theatre movement.

The Professional Project is the culmination of your undergraduate degree course which will enable you to work independently in an area that excites and interests you. The Professional Project enables you to engage with a substantial programme of independent study which allows you to define and explore in some depth a topic relating to your course or intended future employment. You will also develop advanced skills in managing an extended project. The Professional Project provides experience of critically evaluating and reflecting upon the particular methodologies of your subject area. The project may include practical elements, performed on your own or as part of a group.

This module will focus on preparing you for a public performance of a tutor directed contemporary playtext. You will be able to develop your performance skills and critical thinking as an actor and examine your ability to take direction. The module will prepare you for the kind of work that many of our graduates go on to do.

The course is delivered at Cheshire College South and West, in Ellesmere Port. The college is well equipped with a studio theatre that has industry standard lighting and sound equipment, and an atrium performance space that allows for the touring aspects of technical theatre to be practiced.

The collaboration between the University of Wolverhampton and Cheshire College South and West means that students will have the full support of the University’s School of Performing arts, with opportunities for collaborative work, the use of facilities, including the Learning Centre, and the expertise of the staff in the drama department.

Who will teach you on this course?

The course is delivered by experienced teachers who are also experts in the field of theatre technology, all of whom are still practicing in the industry alongside their teaching.

Angie Berwick has current teaching experience of HE both at South and West Cheshire College and as an Associate Lecturer at Edge Hill University. At the College Angie teaches on the HNC/D in Performing Arts and is the Programme Leader for Higher Education programmes within performing arts. Angie has been an associate lecturer with Edge Hill for a number of years where she teaches on their Technical Theatre and Events Management Modules working with Level 4, 5 and 6 students.

Joseph Rhead Joe’s background in audio has enabled him to deliver specific skills across sectors including live events, art installations & studio-based recording. He has many years industry experience, such as co-founding an independent live events & recording studio facility in Liverpool City Center. He has strong industry links across the city alongside his professional teaching duties he continues to work freelance as a sound engineer.

Samantha Cheadle is a Production and Stage Manager who has recently worked on The Chester Mystery Plays 2018. Her experience includes Stage Managing “Lost Boy” an original play by Theatre in the Quarter, she was the resident Stage Manager for LHK Productions and Stage Manager for MJD Productions “You will Never Walk Alone” (2017).

James McMahon is the Managing Director of UK Events Group. James’s company works on large-scale festivals and events including Clubland, DLDK, Brouhaha & Esco Williams. Companies including Colours use UK Events equipment for their Scottish shows for artists including Alesso, Steve Angelo and Paul Oakenfold. His company work for Cashforkids charity, supplying hire and crew to their events.

Kelvin Lloyd (The Epstein Theatre as our partner organisation). The Theatre Manager Rebekah Piggeingi and Kelvin Lloyd (Technical Manager) will support our qualification offering on site development, workshops and work experience.

Storyhouse as our partner organisation the opportunities this will bring are still in development and its early stages. They will support research activities through their studios spaces and in-house productions. Our students can be involved at each stage and support while developing their own areas of research.

You will gain extensive vocational experience. You will have the opportunity to work across the performing arts in a technical role for which you will have developed specialist skills in technology for performance. You could go on to work as stage managers, production managers, in lighting or sound, or scenic design. Students will be skilled in the creative use of technology in a variety of performance contexts.

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund. for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
