About BA Music
If you want to create, perform, talk, or write about music, then our BA in Music is for you. Bristol offers an excitingly broad course of study, weekly concerts and regular masterclasses. Performance opportunities range from symphony to our unique laptop orchestra, from baroque to jazz, and include an array of vocal ensembles.
You will learn to discuss and analyse music at a high level, perform music professionally, arrange, conduct and compose. From medieval chant all the way to 21st-century music and hip-hop, you will learn the history and grammar of different styles of music.
In the first year all units are mandatory, providing the foundation for more advanced study in years two and three. Year one introduces the history of music, acoustic and studio composition, analysis, technical studies and performance. Years two and three allow you to specialise in one or more areas, with optional units including:
acoustic and studio composition
performance
advanced technical studies
analysis
transcription/editing
research-led music history units.
In your final year, all units are optional and you will complete at least one major project including your choice of dissertation, portfolio of compositions or a 30-minute recital. Performance students receive one-to-one tuition throughout their degree with specialist tutors.
