The BFA in Music Scoring & Composition is designed for those students who wish to focus on music composition and scoring for film, television, games and other visual media. Balancing musicianship training with production skills to reflect a changing music industry, students will learn music theory, composition, harmony, orchestration, and arranging, focusing on creating emotion through music in synchronization with visual media. Students will use the latest computer based production workflows, digital audio workstations and virtual instrument libraries. The focus is on composition using virtual instruments, resulting in a composer demo reel in the final year.

About this course

Undergraduate students will meet the following student performance criteria:

Critical Analysis

Synthesize and apply knowledge of contemporary styles to the composition of original music
Production Techniques

Create orchestral mockups and electronic scores using current sequencers and sample libraries
Record and mix scores and music stems using current software and hardware
Composition

Compose music which supports the emotional content of the visual media.
Sketch and compose stylistically appropriate music in a variety of dramatic styles
Orchestrate dramatic music using appropriate instrumental tone colors and voicings
Professional Readiness

Demonstrate professional achievement through creation of a portfolio that showcases skills and supports career opportunities.

BFA Music Scoring and Composition Degree Requirements

Minimum grade of C- in all core courses, major courses, and LA 107 Writing for the Multilingual Artist or 108 Composition for the Artist
Minimum 2.0 GPA and the following general education requirements:
