About this course

Level 1 qualification or appropriate work experience. Preferably work experience in a salon for a minimum of 1 day per week. You must have an aptitude for practical work, good communication skills, the ability to show initiative and a high standard of personal presentation.

Barbering NVQ Level 2
Exam board: City & Guilds
Aim This course is designed to equip you with the necessary practical experience and theoretical knowledge needed for a career in barbering and leads to recognition as a qualified Junior Stylist.
Content Most of your time will be spent working in a salon environment and you will be expected to complete work and compile a comprehensive portfolio of work.

Level 2 recognises the essential skills required to be a hairdresser and includes:
· Health and safety
· Professional consultation
· Shampooing and conditioning
· Blowdrying and styling
· Cutting
· Colouring
· Cutting facial hair
· Teamwork
· Reception

Assessment method
Assessment is continuous throughout the course using a mixture of practical, oral and written methods. All units must be successfully completed in order to achieve the full NVQ qualification. All NVQ courses have a short-answer written examination.

Progression/career opportunities
For those wishing to use their qualifications to gain employment, career opportunities include: hairdressing on a cruise liner, in a TV studio or the theatre; technical representation for a fashion house; work abroad; become a specialist artistic director or salon teacher.

Extra information You will need to buy a uniform and hair design kit. At interview you will be given full details of where you can purchase your uniform and equipment at a competitive price. Your kit will form the basis of your professional work kit and may be used when taking your own clients.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
