Basic chemistry is that part of science that studies the structure, properties and transformations of matter, that is, with everything, precisely, that occupies a space and has a certain mass. Basic chemistry has been defined by many scholars as "the central science" because it connects the other natural sciences, such as astronomy, physics, biology and geology. Chemistry has interested, also for practical reasons deriving from its technological applications, the innumerable populations of humanity since ancient times. From the second century BC alchemy developed, starting from Ptolemaic Egypt, a set of knowledge on matter and its transformations linked to philosophical and esoteric convictions; modern chemistry derived from it (following the scientific revolution, and more precisely to the chemical revolution at the end of the 18th century). Even in the following period, chemistry continued to evolve, because more and more new discoveries expanded its fields of interest and the methods used. In this way, we can classify the main objects of study of basic chemistry: properties of the constituents of matter (atoms), properties of molecular entities, for example ions or molecules, properties of chemical species and properties of mixtures and materials made up of one or more chemical species.
