Do you want to work in construction?
This is a practical course where most of the work is hands on giving you the chance to develop new skills needed for work. If you’re not sure what you’re good at then this 9 week course gives you the opportunity to try any of the following:
•Painting & Decorating – painting procedures and wall paper techniques
•Plumbing – installation of toilet, sink, and radiators
•Bricklaying – mixes, setting-out and bricklaying bonds & techniques
•Electrical Installation – basic wiring systems and lighting/power circuits
•Plastering – fixing of plasterboards, beading and plastering/skimming surfaces
•Carpentry & Joinery – hanging doors, fitting skirting-boards and basic joinery
•Wall & Floor Tiling – tile cutting, setting-out, fixing, grouting, etc.
•Construction Operations – general construction systems and operations

Course programme
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements but enthusiasm and the desire to learn are important. These are short courses and you will be required to be reliable and punctual. These courses may be free if you are currently claiming benefits.
Delivery and Assessment
Courses are delivered at the Erdington Skills Campus in Edwards Road, Erdington, Birmingham. Courses are 15 hours per week over a 9 week period. You will complete a portfolio of evidence based on your practical skills. In addition, you will cover health & safety requirements for your skill area. There are no formal exams.
Progression
After this course you will be offered the opportunity to complete another part of the Basic Construction Skills programme to enhance your skills and employability. You can then choose to move on to a Level 2 or enter employment in the construction industry.
