UKCC Level 1

This is the basic level of coaching qualification for those who wish to commit to coaching basketball. This course provides each candidate with the basic knowledge of basketball and coaching skills and will enable the holder to assist a fully qualified Level 2 Coach.

On successful completion of the Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Basketball, candidates should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an ability to safely organise and supervise basketball activities, including group coaching and using pre-planned coaching session cards
  • Promote and establish working relationships and high standards of behaviour with players, coaches, parents and officials in the overall development of basketball
  • Demonstrate an understanding of: generic coaching skills, basketball-specific coaching skills, coach and performer/player development, health and safety, working with parents, basic rules/laws of basketball, demonstrate an ability to identify and adapt basketball activities and sessions for a variety of different age groups and demonstrate an awareness of further personal development opportunities in basketball

The Level 1 course costs £170 per candidate. Candidates can apply for basketballscotland scholarships which will reduce the cost of courses by 65% to £60!! Please note that scholarships will be allocated to successful applicants on completion of the course (i.e. candidates are required to pay the £170 upfront intially).

The UKCC Level 1 Coaching Qualification Course Syllabus will cover
The role of the Level 1 coach is to: „Assist more qualified coaches, delivering aspects of coaching sessions, normally under direct supervision‟. By successfully completing a Level 1 coaching qualification, as part of a UKCC endorsed coach education programme, coaches will be able to:
1• prepare for the delivery of coaching activities
2- taking into account participants‟ needs and motives
3- establish a safe working environment
4• deliver prepared activities of the coaching sessions
5- establish working relationships with participants and others
6- prepare the participants for the coaching activities
7- support participants behaviour
8- deliver prepared activities
9- conclude the activities
10• evaluate the effectiveness of coaching activities
11- review the activities
12- contribute to the evaluation of participants
13- continuously develop personal practice
14• gain knowledge and understanding of:
15- safe and ethical coaching practice
16- the types and methods of communication to establish effective working relationships with participants and others
17- methods to develop participants‟ performance and enjoyment
18- adapting coaching practice to meet participants‟ needs, their abilities and stages of development
19- the methods to evaluate coaching activities and reflect on personal coaching
20- the basic rules of the game -- contact, movement and dribbling.
- introducing the techniques and basic skills of Footwork, Passing, Shooting, Dribbling, Offence and Defence
- Introducing the game to beginners

Practical Syllabus and Assessment
Candidates will be required to demonstrate an understanding and application of coaching the following Basketball techniques in an appropriate environment, as outlined (for a coach at this level) in the Basketball Health and Safety Guidelines for Coaching. The assessment of the Practical Syllabus will be assessed by the course tutor on a minimum of one 15 minutes coaching session providing a good demonstration of the basic skills of basketball. A 30 minutes written multiple choice/short answer paper (independently assessed) will be conducted to assess candidates‟ knowledge and understanding.
