Exploring the history, context and practice of the mid 20th century electronic music studio and the wider discipline of music concrete. You will explore the techniques in a practical way using software emulations and pre recorded 'tape loops' to create your own music concrete pieces. This course is taught by Max la Villa.

About this course

Describe the basic principles of music concrete composition relating these to historical context.
Use the components of an early electronic studio (oscillators, envelopes, filters, white noise generators and the mixer and tape loop techniques) to create original sounds
Create your own compositions out of tones generated by oscillators, 'tape loops', envelopes and noise generators.

CDrs can be bought for saving your work (£0.50) or students may bring in USB flash drives to back up their work for use elsewhere. Students should always bring a note pad and pen.

Deconstruction and analysis of early electronic music and key music concrete compositions
A practical exploration of the components that make up a music concrete studio
The techniques employed in music concrete composition.

Classes will generally begin with a demonstration and discussion followed by practical work. You will work on one of 10 Mac based workstations to practice set themes, techniques and skills, applying these to your developing ideas and material and you will regularly present your work in progress to the group. You will receive regular support, encouragement and feedback from your tutor throughout the course.

With the growing popularity of music software, further progression in this area tends towards learning and integrating additional software programs and approaches. We offer introductory courses in all of our software and a variety of follow-on courses to take users on to the next level. There is also a range of fast-track introductory courses to most of our software programs. We now offer a wider range of courses focusing on aspects of contemporary practice within our new section - Sonic arts, composing and notating. To further develop your use of creative software, you might consider courses on offer within our wider Digital Arts department. The music department additionally offers a wide range of instrumental and musicianship courses.
