Beauty Therapy

General InformationRetford College has a proven record in superior Beauty Therapy training.
The college has a fully equipped Therapy Salon with 13 couches and a full range of electrical equipment.

Students completing the course have a high success rate in gaining employment in local health spa's & salons due to the number of large establishments in the area.

Further opportunities for students to have their own business after completing their programme.
The Beauty Therapy staff are well trained and have a wide experience of the industry.
A flexible programme of study has been designed which can be adapted to meet the needs of individual students.

The college offers two Beauty Therapy Courses, each lasting one year:

• NVQ Beauty Therapy Level 2 Certificate
• NVQ Beauty Therapy Level 3 Certificate

These two courses are aimed at individuals who wish either to work as beauty therapists or acquire accreditation for their existing skills. Opportunities resulting from this course can vary from working in a beauty salon to more specialized types of work such as working as specialist make-up consultants or representatives, specializing in wedding and photographic make-up. Opportunities are available to work in Health Spa’s cruise liners and other complimentary areas.

To progress to Level 3, the level 2 course must first be completed.

Course Content:

The course is designed to cater for all levels of ability. The final City & Guilds NVQ level achieved will depend on the student’s ability and previous experience.

Practical training takes place in the college’s salon where students are instructed in the basic skills of health and safety, and customer care. The salon is run as a commercial enterprise and students will gain experience of dealing with members of the public.

Level 2 Beauty Therapy

This course consist of a full time NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy.

Duration of 36 weeks from September to July:

• Wednesday 9.30—12.30
• Thursday 9.30—4.15
• Friday 9.30—12.30

Course content includes:

• Manicure
• Pedicure
• Makeup
• Facials
• Eyebrow Treatments
• Waxing
• Promoting Products & Services
• Reception
• Health & Safety

Level 3 Beauty Therapy

This course consist of a full time NVQ Level 3 in Beauty Therapy.

Duration of 36 weeks from September to July:

• Monday 9.30—4.15
• Tuesday 9.30—4.15

Course content includes:

• Swedish Massage
• Electrical Facial Techniques
• Electrolysis
• Electrical Body Techniques
• Aromatherapy Massage – using pre-blended oils
• Health and Safety
• Promote additional products & services to clients
• Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business
• Salon supervisory skills

Key skills may be included on your timetable. These include Information Technology, Application of Number, Communication, Working with Others and Improving own Learning.

All students are expected to provide their own protective uniform and some personal equipment which may be purchased through the college.

Videos, demonstrations, visits to shows and competitions all form part of the varied learning programme. All students undertake a work placement during the course. This is an invaluable part of the course and in the past has enabled students to gain employment.

Entry requirements:

Beauty Therapy Level 2

There are no formal requirements for this course but applicants will require a basic level of Numeracy and communication skills.

Beauty Therapy Level 3

A certificate in Beauty Therapy at Level 2 or equivalent must be undertaken to ensure completion of level 3 units.
