Aim This course is designed to introduce you to the skills and knowledge required by a professional beauty therapist. It will appeal to you if you are thinking of pursuing a career in beauty therapy and provides a thorough practical grounding before entry on to NVQs at Level 2. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in all aspects of beauty therapy to a national and international standard.

Content Most of your time will be spent learning, practicing and working in a salon environment. However, you will also study other therapies and health and safety in a theory session.

The emphasis on this programme is on the development of practical skills and confidence. A small amount of written work and a portfolio will be completed. It is anticipated that students following a full time programme will complete the NVQ Level 1 within 3 terms.

This qualification consists of the following units:
· Introduction to facials
· Introduction to manicures
· Reception procedures
· Health and safety
· Teamworking
· Certificate in Introduction to Therapies.

Assessment is continuous throughout the course using a mixture of practical, oral and written methods. All units must be successfully completed in order to achieve the full NVQ qualification. All NVQ courses have a short-answer written examination.

Progression/career opportunities
Successful students can progress onto Level 2 Beauty Therapy. A further interview will explain the course content in detail.

Extra information You will need to buy uniform and a beauty therapy kit. At interview you will be given full details of where you can purchase your uniform and equipment at a competitive price. Your kit will form the basis of your professional work kit and may be used when taking your own clients.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
