This course is for those who want to feel more confident, knowledgeable and skilful in their use of email, either for personal or work use. You will learn how to set up different types of web-based email accounts (Google, Hotmail, Yahoo) and decide which is best for you. We will consider security issues such as how to choose passwords, how to protect yourself from phishing, malware and other efforts to steal data and personal information from your emails, which anti-virus software is available and how to use it. We will practise sending and receiving emails to single and multiple recipients, retrieving emails you didn’t want to send, establishing group emails, formatting messages, adding electronic signatures, adding and removing attachments. We will look at how to send big files. There will be a lot of emphasis on managing and organising your emails including how to set up folders and labels, how to change the appearance of your inbox and general display, deleting and archiving emails, using importance markers, filtering your messages so they go into particular folders or are marked in special ways, prioritising emails, blocking senders, controlling SPAM. You will also learn how integrate your web-based email with other mail clients such as Outlook and make sure that you can email appropriately in a work-setting.

• use email etiquette and conventions to write both formal vs informal messages for both work and personal use.

Please bring a folder, pens and paper. There are no additional costs.

This will be a practical hands-on course. Each student has their own computer and you will be encouraged to practise as much as possible. An interactive whiteboard will help make demonstrations easy to understand. It will be a relaxed learning environment and step by step learning will help you become more skilled. You will have lots of opportunities to ask questions and address areas you need help in.
