Course programme

You’ll learn the advanced practical skills and theoretical knowledge to carry out complex operations in the workplace. As a joiner, you’ll be trained to use a variety of machines to make curved frames and staircases, boxed framed windows and spandrel panelling.

This course is ideal for young people who are not employed in the trade, as it will provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable to gain employment in the industry or a NVQ.

This course focuses on practical activity but includes some written theory and portfolio building, consists of the following units:

  • CSA-L1Core01 Health, safety and welfare in the construction and associated industries
  • CSA-L3Core07 Analysing technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • CSA-L3Core08 Analysing the construction industry and the built environment
  • CSA-L3Occ135 Set up and operate woodworking machinery to create curved work
  • CSA-L3Occ136 Manufacture shaped joinery products
  • CSA-L3Occ137 Set and mark out for shaped joinery products

At this advanced level, working in our simulated workshop environment, you will learn a wide variety of practical skills (and theoretical knowledge) which will enable you to carry out complex operations in a Joinery workshop and prepare you for entry to Workshop Management. Areas to cover include curved work including frames and staircases, boxed frame windows, spandrel panelling and units and fitments. You will be trained to use a wide variety of machines to produce the various pieces of work. There will be a number of theory assessments with a final practical assignment to complete the qualification.

Every learner at Central Sussex College who is under 19 will undertake a personal Study Programme designed to develop them academically, practically and personally. Study Programmes contain 3 essential elements:

  • Subject Course – Vocational or chosen Academic subject, usually studied for 12 – 16 hours a week.
  • English and Maths – Every learner will work towards Level 2 English and Maths (C grade equivalent). Learners who have achieved a Grade C will extend their English and Maths.
  • 3E – Our own brand of specific entrepreneurship, enterprise and employability training.

You will have specific time in your timetable for each of the three elements above and you will be expected to attend all elements throughout the year. Study programmes are designed to help you meet your maximum potential and progress to the next level of study of into work.
