Is the course for me?

The Intermediate Construction Award (ICA) in Bench Joinery is designed to prepare people for work in the Bench Joinery Industry. It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the assessment is based on candidates producing products to a recognised industrial standard.

The ICA comprises:
Core Units

Occupation-specific Units

A practical Phase Test

An Occupation-specific, multi choice on line Test

A Health and Safety, multi choice on line Test; Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS)

What does the course involve?

You will Learn about:

Health and safety

Basic joints

Hand tools

Store materials and equipment

Erect and dismantle basic working platforms

Work efficiently

Use portable power tools

Produce setting out details

Mark out joinery

Produce joinery products

How will I learn?

You will learn in a variety of ways:

Group and individual study

Practical assessments

Written Assignments

Oral questioning at the end of each practical assessment

The use of on-line facilities

Considerable home study required

The course consists of a series of College set practical assessments and written assignments; together they consolidate the theory knowledge gained during group and individual study with the communication skills necessary to implement good working practices in the bench joinery industry.

What will I need for the course?

Steel toe boots or shoes (when in the workshops), all other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be supplied by the College

Black or Blue pen for written work

2H or 3H pencil for drawing and practical assessments, an eraser and pencil sharpener.

All other drawing and marking equipment will be supplied as and when required.

All materials, hand tools and Portable Power Tools will be supplied by the College.

What options are open to me if I successfully complete the course?

This is a nationally recognised qualification that prepares you for work in the bench joinery Industry.

Once you have gained employment, you can work towards an NVQ Level 2 in bench joinery.

Or you may continue your studies at the Advanced Construction Award (ACA Level).

What qualifications or experience do I need to get on the course?

None specific to the bench joinery Industry, but good English and maths skills are an advantage.

Total commitment to work hard and meet the required standards in all areas of the course.

The course duration is for two years at two days per week. The course starts in September.
