Aerospace systems engineers need to be multidisciplined and have as much knowledge of avionics as aeronautical systems. They’re particularly interested in the overall performance of aircraft, specialising in the design and integration of mechanical and avionics systems. This professionally accredited course includes not only traditional aeronautical disciplines, but also specialist modules such as modern navigation equipment, cockpit instrumentation, flight controls and logistics engineering. A highlight of the course is the group project in the Final Year, where you’ll collaborate with other aerospace students to design a complete aircraft. This course provides the first step towards chartered engineer status.

About this course

This BEng Honours degree in Aerospace Systems Engineering has been running successfully for many years at the University; You will have the chance to learn about Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs), rocketry and space tourism; You will benefit from use of our flight simulator which will enhance your understanding of aircraft performance, stability and control; You will be offered the opportunity to take a short air-experience flight in the second year of the course, flying either a light aircraft or a microlight aircraft. Please note, this is subsidised by the University but still incurs an added cost.

Employment opportunities for graduates are excellent across both the civilian and defence sides of the aerospace industry. Previous graduates have found employment with major aerospace companies in the UK and abroad as well as with smaller companies in the aerospace supply chain. Many others decide to stay at the University and extend their aerospace education to a postgraduate level.
Students have previously undertaken placements in organisations such as:
Honeywell (UK) Ltd
Goodrich Engine Control Systems
Marshall Aerospace
MBDA
Eads Astrium
Rockwell
and numerous smaller companies

104 UCAS points

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Systems Engineering course is accredited by RAes and IMechE and satisfies, in part, the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration for the cohort intakes from 2016 up to, and including, 2020.

Course programme

What you will learn

You will become familiar with our flight simulators as well as commercial simulation software such as MatLab. In the Fourth Year you will have the opportunity to take the astronautics option, studying rocketry and space dynamics alongside the astrophysicists. A highlight of the course for many of our students is the group design project in the Fourth Year where you join with other aerospace students to design a complete aircraft.

First Year

You will study aerospace technology and industry, engineering mathematics, engineering applications of mathematics, materials and electrical science, mechanical science, introduction to manufacturing technology, career skills development, introduction to design, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.

Second Year

You will study aerothermodynamics, aerospace design, aircraft systems, avionics systems, dynamics and data acquisition and control systems, further engineering mathematics, project management and product development.

Third Year

You have the option of taking an integrated one-year professional placement.

Fourth Year (3rd or 4th)

You will study aerospace performance, propulsion and design, stability and control of aircraft, aerospace systems integration, control systems, terrestrial and satellite communication systems, and an individual major project.

Work Placement

You have the opportunity to spend a year working either in a professional research environment or within industry. The practical experience you gain will be of tremendous benefit both when you resume your studies and when you embark on a career.
