Mechatronics brings together precision mechanics, electronics, controls and computer engineering through a process of integrated design. It involves creating a wide range of technologies such as sensors, actuators, interface hardware, control systems, software, and analogue and digital electronics. The applications for these technologies affect all our lives and can be found everywhere: aircraft, cars, trains, healthcare, materials processing, advanced manufacturing systems, defence systems, consumer electronics and more. Using the latest tools and our specialist labs, you’ll learn the fundamental skills in electronic systems, manufacturing technology, engineering mathematics, computer programming, mechanical science, design, robotics and many more areas.

Employment prospects are excellent, with graduates having the flexibility to work in almost any engineering company in the UK or abroad. MEng graduates can expect to be in senior managerial positions within a few years.

Course programme
You will learn to handle a wide range of technologies in sensors, actuators, interface hardware, control systems, analogue and digital electronics, software engineering, and concurrent design.
First Year
You will study introduction to electronic systems, materials and electrical science, introduction to manufacture technology, engineering mathematics, computer programming for electronics engineers, mechanical science, introduction to design, engineering applications of mathematics.
Second Year
You will study digital design and embedded systems, dynamics, CAE, further engineering mathematics, data acquisition and control systems, structural mechanics, integrated engineering systems design, and project management and product development.
Third Year
You have the option of taking an integrated one-year professional placement.
Final Year (3rd or 4th)
You will study digital signal processing, control systems, operating systems and object oriented programming, individual major project, intelligent systems and robotics, micro-engineering and micro-technology, and mechatronics design.
You have the opportunity to spend a year working either in a professional research environment or within industry. The practical experience you gain will be of tremendous benefit both when you resume your studies and when you embark on a career.
