Our Biochemistry with Biomedicine degree is for those who would like to study the structure and function of living organisms at the biochemical and molecular level, but who want to focus on how the molecular processes of life are altered by disease. Lancaster University is ranked fifth in the UK for Biological Sciences and ninth for Chemistry by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.


The degree will provide you with training in key aspects of biochemistry and biomedicine that are at the heart of modern biochemical and medical research, giving you an insight into how biochemistry can be used to develop treatments for diseases. We have extensive links with local hospitals, both in research activities and teaching on our biomedical-based courses.


The first year of the BSc Biochemistry with Biomedicine is designed to provide you with a broad overview of both subject disciplines, including Molecules of Life, Biomedicine and Society, and Anatomy and Tissue Structure.


In your second year, you will move on to a range of biochemical and biomedical subjects, with several modules designed to help you develop the key laboratory skills required by scientists working in these areas. Modules include Medical Microbiology, DNA Technology and Cell Biology.


In your third year, you can tailor your degree to your personal and professional interests, selecting from a diverse range of optional modules including Tropical Diseases, Medical Genetics and Biology of Ageing.
During your degree, you will conduct your own laboratory-based project and benefit from the research experience of our internationally renowned academics. You will also receive in-depth training in the key techniques associated with modern biomedical practice.

About this course

After studying Biochemistry with Biomedicine at Lancaster University, you can look forward to a promising career in areas such as academic, industrial and medical research, pharmaceuticals, the food industry and forensic science. 95% of Lancaster’s BSc Biochemistry with Biomedicine graduates are in work or further study six months after graduating, 60% of those in employment are in professional or managerial positions (Unistats 2018). Alternatively, the degree is an ideal base from which to continue on to postgraduate study.


The transferable skills and analytical training you will gain during your degree will allow you to enter science or diverse fields such as management, marketing and finance. You will gain practical skills such as laboratory competence and experimental design; numerical skills such as statistical analysis, data recording and presentation; and interpersonal skills such as team working, communication and negotiation.


An employability skills module will help you manage your professional development and prepare for the job market. Your independent, laboratory-based research project will give you valuable research experience using the latest technology. We also offer you the opportunity to apply for a paid summer internship within Biomedical and Life Sciences at Lancaster University. Past research topics have included: Alzheimer’s disease, biochemistry, cancer biology, DNA replication, immunology, microbiology and tropical infectious diseases.

Required Subjects A level Chemistry and one other science subject from Biology, Mathematics or Physics

GCSE Mathematics grade B or 5, English Language grade C or 4

Lancaster University offers a range of programmes, some of which follow a structured study programme, and others which offer the chance for you to devise a more flexible programme. We divide academic study into two sections - Part 1 (Year 1) and Part 2 (Year 2, 3 and sometimes 4). For most programmes Part 1 requires you to study 120 credits spread over at least three modules which, depending upon your programme, will be drawn from one, two or three different academic subjects. A higher degree of specialisation then develops in subsequent years.
