About this course
To study a full A Level programme, students will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade A* to C including Maths. GCSE grade C or above in Biology or Double Science (Higher tier) is a mandatory requirement for this course. A Grade B or above in Double Science is the preferred entry for this subject.

The Programme
This programme will build on and develop GCSE knowledge/concepts as well as introducing new subject areas and skills. AS Units 1, 2 are assessed by examination and Unit 3 by a laboratory based practical under controlled conditions. A2 Units 4 and 5 are assessed by examination and Unit 6 by a practical assessment under controlled conditions. The programme will also develop skills of linking subject areas together (synoptic skills).
The Programme Content
AS Unit 1 Biology and Disease uses diseases e.g. cholera to understand body physiology as well as explaining the symptoms and interpreting data. Unit 2 The variety of living organisms, considers genetic and environmental factors as well as the impact of human activity on the environment. Unit 3 brings together the practical skills and knowledge from Units 1and 2 to complete a practical exercise. A2 Unit 4 Populations and the environment examines the role of humans in the environment considering the conflict between human needs and conservation. Unit 5 Control in cells and in organisms considers how cells, tissues and organs respond to external and internal stimuli. Unit 6 brings together the practical skills and knowledge of all AS/A2 units to complete a practical exercise.
Progression / Careers
Combined with the appropriate supporting qualification, students may be able to follow a degree course, (e.g. Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Nursing, Psychology or Physiotherapy, to name but a few); or enter a higher national course in Biological Science and related programmes or enter employment, (e.g. in the area of Biotechnology, Marine Biology or Environmental Health).
