AS Human Biology

Is this course right for me?

This course introduces you to the fundamental processes that keep your body alive and well. You will look in depth at the main body systems and at the activities of individual cells and the role of important biochemicals.

What will I be learning?

AS Levels are at an intermediate level between GCSE and a full A Level. It is possible at the end of the course to progress to take the full A2 Level. The AS units are Blood, Circulation and Gaseous Exchange; Growth, Development and Disease, and Centre-assessed coursework.

OCR Human Biology is different to the qualifications offered by other boards as it places more emphasis on biology in relation to health and includes discussion of associated ethical issues. It will be equally relevant to you if you are studying Humanities or 'straight sciences'.

How will I learn?

You will be learning in a variety of ways including teacher-led discussions, lectures, small-group work and laboratory sessions. You will also be asked to use computers in class time with subject tutor support, both for research and for assessment. Learners have access to our virtual learning environment (Moodle) to access resources and undertake both individual and group-based online learning.

Assessment is through a combination of examinations and coursework. You can take the 1st unit exam in January. There will be weekly homework and regular in-class asessment. This will not always be formal and will include quizzes such as 'Blockbuster'.

What else might I want to know?

You will need to buy a text book "Human Biology for AS" by Jones M and Jones J Cambridge and you may want to buy your own lab coat. Both of these can be bought through the college if you wish. You will also need a calculator.

AS Human Biology is different to GCSE Biology, not only because of the depth of knowledge but also because you have to understand the content well enough to apply it to unknown situations. There is very little 'naming of parts' as you will be looking at the fundamental processes in the body.

What can I do afterwards?

If you intend applying to University you will probably have to continue to A2 Human Biology. You might also seek employment in a relevant sector such as health care
