About this course

To study for the A2 Biology you will need AS Biology or at least GCSE grade C Maths and English. You should preferably also have GCSE grade BB Double Science or grade C Biology, but grade CC Double Science will be considered on an individual basis.

About the Course
AS Level
Unit 1: Lifestyle, transport, genes and health
Cardiovascular system, structure and function of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, enzyme action, passive and active transport, structure and properties of cell membranes, structure and role of DNA and RNA, DNA replication, protein synthesis, monohybrid inheritance, gene mutations, principles of gene therapy and the social and ethical issues.
Unit 2: Development, plants and the environment
Cell structure and ultrastructure of eukaryotes and prokaryotes, genotype and environmental influence, stem cell research and its implications, biodiversity, adaptations and natural selection, principles of taxonomy, plant cell structure, transport of water in plants and the uses of plant products.
Unit 3: Practical biology and research skills
You will submit a report of between 1500 and 2000 words - either a record of a visit to a site of biological interest or a report of research into a biological topic. Practical skills will be internally assessed.
A2 Level
Unit 4: The natural environment and species survival
Photosynthesis, energy transfer within ecosystems, evidence for global warming, evolution through natural selection and speciation, nutrient cycling, DNA profiling and PCR, structure of bacteria and viruses, infectious diseases (eg AIDS and TB) and immunology.
Unit 5: Energy, exercise and coordination
ATP, glycolysis, anaerobic and aerobic respiration, control and functioning of the heart, ventilation and cardiac output, impact of exercise on the body and improving performance, homeostasis, the nervous system, hormonal co-ordination, brain structure and development, imbalance in brain chemicals and the Human Genome Project.
Unit 6: Practical biology and investigative skills
You will devise and carry out an experimental investigation and submit a written report.

For both AS and A2 there are two written examinations, worth 80%, and coursework worth 20%.

What next?
You may progress to a degree course in any biological science, medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, microbiology, pharmacy, physiotherapy or environmental sciences as well as a wide range of other courses, or you may go directly to employment. If you are applying to study medicine, nursing, physiotherapy or other subject leading to health-related professions, relevant work experience is available together with tutorial sessions and mock interviews.
