Students will be able to progress on to a GCSE Mathematics course if they wish. Students who wish to progress on to the Access to Higher Education course will need to have achieved a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in Mathematics or an alternative GCSE equivalent.

Course programme

You will learn to develop and practise your mathematics skills in all areas of the Maths curriculum. Your confidence in your mathematical abilities will increase and you will apply your mathematical learning to a variety of practical and real-life situations. Skills taught on the course include: Representing problems mathematically You will be given the opportunity to develop the following skills: - understand practical problems in familiar and unfamiliar contexts and situations- identify and obtain the necessary information to tackle a problem - select mathematics in an organised way to find solutions Analysing problems mathematically You will be given the opportunity to develop the following skills: - apply mathematics in an organised way to find solutions to straightforward practical problems - use appropriate checking procedures Interpret mathematical problems and data You will be given the opportunity to develop the following skills: - interpret and communicate solutions to practical problems, drawing simple conclusions and giving explanations The course runs for 32 weeks, and we offer both daytime and evening classes. There are usually no lessons during Hampshire school holidays. All students will have the opportunity to sit a City & Guilds Functional Skills qualification in Mathematics at Level 1 or Level 2. Your course tutor will discuss with you when they believe you are ready to sit an assessment. A Level 2 qualification is considered equivalent to a Maths GCSE Grade C by employers and colleges.Students will be expected to attend weekly lessons which will be delivered as a mixture of taught sessions, group work, paired work and individual tasks. There is also the opportunity to practice with past assessment papers and there are regular assessment tasks/activities. There will be an emphasis on developing the ability to use and apply Maths in your daily life and work and develop reasoning and problem solving skills. There are opportunities throughout the year for students to be entered for their Maths assessments.
