About this course

On this course you will gain detailed insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms of a range of diseases, and into options for improved diagnosis and treatment. Immersed in an environment where around one third of research income comes from industry-funded sources, you will experience cutting-edge advanced technologies related to data analysis, imaging of cells, analysis of proteins and proteomes, cell culture and manipulation - including of stem cells. You will also have access to drug discovery and phenotypic screening technologies in facilities devoted to academic research but of a standard normally only found in large biopharmaceutical companies.

Research labs in universities and employers in the biotechnology and biopharmaceutical industries expect their postgraduate recruits to have advanced technical and communication skills, to be confident team-workers, independent researchers, good project managers and be at the leading edge of their specialism. Our degree courses are designed to respond to these demands.

Our courses provide the framework which can set you on the path to careers in laboratory research, clinical trial coordination, regulatory affairs, lab management, scientific publishing, and bioscience entrepreneurship. Our graduates can expect to continue in academic research or work in small and large multinational companies in the biosciences sphere.

You’ll be able to make use of the University's dedicated careers service to help you to confidently present yourself to the world's top employers.

Applicants should normally have, or expect to have, a first or upper second class BSc honours degree or an equivalent qualification in a scientific discipline in the field of biological, biochemical or biomedical sciences.
