Why study MSci Biomedical Science?
By studying MSci Biomedical Science, you will gain a scientific understanding of the biology of disease, along with its diagnosis and treatment, up to BSc level. You will then take an integrated fifth year at Masters level, which includes an extended research project.
You will develop skills at the forefront of advances in medical science. This means you will be equipped with analytical, problem-solving and communication abilities when you graduate, and will be able to compete for exciting and rewarding opportunities working or studying in biomedical research.

The MSci in Biomedical Science offers a hands-on approach to learning. Beginning with a strong foundation in modern biomedicine, including basic scientific core subjects, the study of biomedical science specialist subjects is integrated through a study of the biology of disease. Working at the cutting-edge of biomedical science and using state-of-the-art equipment, our focus on the application of science in the real-world will prepare you for a variety of exciting careers. In the fifth year of study, the teaching and research will develop your advanced research skills: MSci projects are aligned to areas of research excellence as you work alongside research-focused academic staff.
You will experience engaging and outstanding learning, teaching and support services throughout your student journey, fully utilising advances in technology to support your academic and professional development. As well as receiving in-depth subject-specific training in research, you will gain transferable skills applicable to broader areas such as management, finance and marketing.

Professional accreditation
This course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) which allows you to apply for registration as a biomedical scientist.
Placements
Throughout the course, you will be able to apply your expertise and build professional skills in work-based settings by applying for placements, internships and volunteering roles. The six-year sandwich course option involves 40 weeks of work-based training that may be in a specialised area of biomedical science.

Course programme
Foundation year (Year zero)
You will study the following compulsory modules:
- Biology in Practice
- Chemistry in Practice
- Skills for Science
- People and Science.
You will study the Foundation year alongside students from our other Biological, Biomedical and Analytical Sciences courses, and therefore may be able to transfer to a course in one of these areas at the end of the Foundation year.
The normal expectation is that you must pass all Year zero modules before progressing to Year one.
Year one

Year two

Year three
You will study one of the following modules:
- Research Dissertation Project
- Research Experimental Project.
Plus two OR three of the following specialist modules:
- Medical Genetics
- Medical Microbiology

- Clinical Biochemistry
- Cellular Pathology and Oncology
- Immunology.
Plus selection/s from the following optional modules, depending on credit requirements:

Learning and TeachingWe encourage student-centred learning, supported by learning packages and a web-based Virtual Learning Environment. Guided independent learning is enabled through lectures, seminars and tutorials. Practical classes are very important in supporting learning, with both laboratory and computer-based sessions.
In the final year, you will carry out an independent research project to seek new biomedical knowledge. Your research project will be undertaken with a tutor supervisor and may be carried out alongside his/her research team.
Your tutors are all engaged in research and other scholarly activity, working across the range of disciplines encompassed by biomedical sciences. They will support your learning and encourage you to develop as a biomedical scientist.

AssessmentThe range of assessment methods includes both traditional approaches, such as essays and reports, as well as group tasks and presentations. You will work closely with students in your group and will be supported by both student advisers and a tutor. Overall, assessment is through both coursework and examinations.
