Course programme

You will study 6 modules valued at 20 credits in each year, making a total of 240 credits; 120 per year. In the first year your learning will begin with the Integrated Biomolecular Science unit followed by the Integrated Practical Skills unit which will develop your understanding of and performance in bench science. These units are supported throughout the year by Professional Development and Mathematics You will also study Physical, Inorganic and Introduction to Organic Chemistry as well as Biochemical Processes or Further Organic Chemistry along with developing knowledge and practical skills. In the second year you will study Medicinal Chemistry, Chemistry with Materials Science as well as a choice of two from Microbiology & Microbial Disease, Biotechnology and Pharmacology & Therapeutics. Delivery is focussed on developing both the specialist academic and practical skills required for success in the science industry in addition fostering those attitudes which seen in good employees. The course develops crucial employability skills (such as scientific writing, self-discipline, teamwork, working under pressure, self-motivation and creativity in the workplace) in addition to delivering a sound knowledge and understanding of science to enable you to progress into employment or top-up and to be successful in the professional career of your choice. This course has minimum entry requirements of 2 x E in a relevant GCE ‘A’ level or a minimum pass in BTEC Diploma/Extended Diploma or another vocational level 3 qualification, together with a GCSE at grade C in English or equivalent. However, candidates receiving this minimum offer would need to demonstrate experience in and commitment to their chosen Foundation Degree subject. A typical offer is likely to be 2 x D at A level, or a merit/merit/pass profile in a relevant BTEC Diploma. International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria. Speakers of other languages need to have an IELTS score of at least 6.0 (with no individual element scored less than 5.5) or a recognised Level 2 English qualification. We welcome applications from mature candidates who may not have met the academic criteria, but can demonstrate a wealth of experience in their chosen field. Candidates in this category are likely to be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and asked to provide a portfolio of evidence to support their application. All students must be able to demonstrate either by qualifications or testing that they have the required literacy skills to complete the course. All students need also to be aware that it may be a requirement of progression onto a top up degree that they have both English and Maths at GCSE grade C. Students who do not have these qualifications have the opportunity to gain them whilst at college.
