Biomedical science is concerned with the detailed study of the human body, both in health and disease, with emphasis on the diagnosis and understanding of disease states and the mechanisms involved. Initially you will study the important fundamental sciences, including biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and human anatomy and physiology. You will develop your understanding of disease processes and the biology of the associated molecular changes, combined with the principles of lab procedures used to aid diagnosis. You will also study immunology, pathophysiology and medical genetics within the context of human health and disease processes. In Year 3 you will focus on the study of the complex nature of disease as it affects particular biological systems. The study of disease processes centres on underlying physiological mechanisms and the lab procedures used in haematology, clinical immunology, cellular and molecular pathology, and medical microbiology, to diagnose and monitor disease. A major research project will enable you to develop the skills you need for genuine scientific inquiry. Teaching includes lectures and seminars, practical laboratory work, group activities and tutorials, and supervised use of facilities. Assessment is through a combination of exams and coursework (including essays, practical work, group work, presentations and reports).
