About this course

No formal qualifications are required for the level 2 PEO, though students must demonstrate a positive attitude to learning and developing themselves at interview, followed by an assessment test.
For mature students the entry criteria will be discussed on an individual basis.

Boat Building (PEO) NVQ Level 2

About the course:
The qualification comprises of 6 units and is focused on students building up the skills required to enter the marine industry. Students will through practical and theory sessions work towards achieving the level 2 qualification as well as at least key skill. This qualification allows students to progress onto higher-level courses such as the 'Maritime Technology Certificate' or an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Course Content:
Essential (mandatory) units must be undertaken by all students.
  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Developing yourself and working with other people on engineering activities
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Marking out for engineering activities

The two recommended units for yacht and boat building are:
  • Using wood for pattern/model making and other engineering applications
  • Making components from composite materials

Additional units can be undertaken, such as:
  • Moving loads by slinging and lifting
  • Identifying and selecting engineering materials
  • Using computer software packages to assist with engineering activities


Progression:
Upon successful completion of the level 2, students can progress onto a higher level qualification at the Marine Technology Centre, or an Advanced Apprenticeship though City Training.
