In this course, you will learn fundamental steps and approaches to movements frequently performed by bboys and bgirls worldwide. You will gain a basic understanding of rhythm and how to perform fundamental movements to drum breaks. You will also learn a few short combinations which can be shown to the groups at the end of the course. You will develop the ability to freestyle, using these combinations of steps in your own way.

About this course
Demonstrate fundamental moves within the Breakdance repertoire to music.
Identify improved co-ordination, flexibility, strength and stamina.
Perform a freestyle and choreographed routines with greater confidence.
Recall a brief history of the dance.
It is advised to bring a soft hat such as a beanie and knee pads for protection during floor sequences. If you do not have knee pads then long, loose trousers/tracksuit bottoms that cover your knees are recommended.
Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. Trainers, dance shoes or plimsols are essential. Jock straps should be worn by men. Students are required to tie their hair back if it is long for their own safety and comfort. Jewellery should be removed at the start of the class.
The course has a physical approach from beginning to end with structured exercises to improve different qualities. The class is tutor led and you will be taught through demonstration and explanation. During the class participants will be given an opportunity to demonstrate the work and receive verbal feedback from your tutor. We encourage you to work in your own time to perfect the work but there is no formal requirement to do so.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Course programme
This course will cover many topics at a basic level to give a general understanding of what elements are present in the dance and how different movements are linked together to create a dynamic style.
We will be practicing in particular a variety of basic top rock, footwork and freezes. We will also cover a brief history of Break dance and how certain movements were pioneered and innovated through the involvement of different cultures together in the Bronx, New York.
