About this course

You must have successfully completed the BSL Introduction course before you can progress to the BSL Foundation course. To apply for this course starting in January 2010 please complete a college application form and return it to the college.

Who is this course for?
The course is for anyone interested in acquiring basic British Sign Language skills to commuicate with deaf people. The course will provide learners with basic information about deaf people, the deaf community and deaf culture. The course is a 40 hour addition to the Introduction to BSL course and offers learners the opportunity to develop their everyday BSL use.

What will I learn?
Foundation A (20 hours) - you will learn to ask and give directions, describe people, talk about your relations and friends, buying clothes, describe the weather, how to order food and holidaying abroad.Foundation B (20 hours) - you will learn to describe and ask about work and leisure activities in more detail, travel arrangements, how to make a reservation, shopping at the market, inviting and offering, how to leave and give a message and how to deal with emergencies.

Assessment
Examinations are undertaken by examiners approved by IBSL (Institute of British Sign Language). The exam is a one-to-one conversation with an examiner (a deaf person) and lasts between 5 - 7 minutes. Learners must pass the Foundation exam to progress on to the Intermediate A course.

On Completion Achievement / Progression
On successful completion of the BSL Foundation course learners may progress to the BSL Intermediate A course.
