Who is this course for?
The course is for anyone interested in acquiring basic British Sign Language skills to communicate with deaf people. The course will provide learners with basic information about deaf people, the deaf community and deaf culture.
What will I learn?
Foundation A (20 hours) - you will learn to ask for and give directions, describe people, talk about your relatives and friends, buying clothes, describe the weather, how to order food and holidaying abroad.Foundation B (20 hours) - you will learn to describe and ask about work and leisure activities in more detail, travel arrangements, how to make a reservation, shopping, inviting and offering, how to leave and how to give a message and dealing with emergencies.
Assessment
Examinations are undertaken by examiners approved by the IBSL (Institute of British Sign Language). The examination is one-to-one with an examiner (a deaf person), and is a two-way conversation lasting between five and seven minutes.
On Completion Achievement / Progression
Learners must pass the Foundation course to progress on to the Intermediate A course.
