  • Not sure about job prospects yet as I ain't graduated and started looking for a job just yet, but one of the best improvements this uni has done recently is make the library open for 24 hours. It has millions of books on like 6 different floors and you can even sleep in there, lectures are good, some hot birds here too hehehe.

Course programme

The first year of this three-year course ensures you have the necessary building blocks to choose effectively from the wide range of courses on offer in the second and third years. You will be given increasingly extensive choice of modules throughout the degree programme so you are able to direct your own learning.

Year 1

The first year enables you to build a strong foundation of knowledge through compulsory modules in Understanding the Dynamic Planet, physical and chemical processes in the Earth system, and Research and Field Skills. They will introduce you to a range of subjects you are unlikely to have come across until now, ensuring that you will be able to choose optional modules effectively in the following years.

Year 2

In this year you take modules on earth science skills, global tectonics and sedimentology, but alongside these you have freedom to tailor your course selecting optional subjects from a wide range of specialist modules, examples including geomorphology, geophysics and hydrogeology.

Year 3

The focus of your third year of study is a substantial independent research project, allowing you to investigate a specialist area of your own interest in depth. You will also have the opportunity to select subjects to study from a range of optional modules - including Geophysical Hazards, Paleoclimatology and an overseas Geosciences field course.
