  • UEA is a brillant place, met so many people with different walks of life. It's a good place with lots of fun. As a fresher, the union events were great in breaking the ice and it also helps you to introduce you to lot of people. In the first year, get out and go nuts!

Course programme

This four-year course follows a similar structure to the 3-year BSc Geology with Geography programme, but with an additional year spent gaining work experience through an industrial placement. The first year of this four-year course ensures you have the necessary building blocks to choose effectively from the wide range of courses on offer in the second and fourth years. You will be offered an increasingly wide choice of modules throughout the degree programme so you are able to direct your own learning.

Year 1

The first year enables you to build a strong foundation of knowledge through compulsory modules in Understanding the Dynamic Planet, physical and chemical processes in the Earth system, and Research and Field Skills. They will introduce you to a range of subjects you are unlikely to have come across until now, ensuring that you will be able to choose optional modules effectively in the following years.

Year 2

In this year you take modules on earth science skills, global tectonics and sedimentology, but alongside these you have freedom to tailor your course selecting optional subjects from a wide range of specialist modules, examples including geomorphology, geophysics and hydrogeology.

Year 3 (Year in Industry)

You will spend your third year on an industrial work placement lasting from 9 to 14 months, gaining relevant experience and developing your skills and knowledge. We have established links throughout the UK and beyond, and we will help you identify and compete for appropriate positions.

Year 4

During your final year you will undertake a substantial research training project in a topic that matches your interests. You will also study advanced level subjects chosen from a wide range of optional modules including Geophysical Hazards, Paleoclimatology and an overseas Geosciences fieldcourse.
