This course is the same as the one which is delivered on-campus at the University of Northampton. Students take the same modules and complete the same assessments. Students are provided with full access to the University's online library and virtual learning environment. This course is designed to give graduates a solid grounding in the skills and techniques required for business computing with a specific focus on web design. It is aligned to the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) and provides a strong skills base. Students develop a range of skills which include design (with a specific focus on web design), technical development and commercial. Students will use internationally recognised branded and open-source software to build technically efficient systems. For example, students will develop their expertise in Oracle, Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS and PHP. Students will develop their understanding in how information systems are used to support customer relations and business strategy. This will ensure they graduate with the skills which employers require. Year 1 focuses on essential concepts for the implementation of business computing systems, which include aspects of design, analysis, development and information management. Students are exposed to current principles and practice while acquiring the knowledge and skills which are relevant to future vocational careers. In Year 2 students develop web skills: web development, creative design, management and marketing. Emphasis is placed on the human aspects of design and the importance of usability and accessibility in the creation of successful websites. In the final third year, students complete three specialised modules, a career development module, and an applied consultancy project with a real world client or a dissertation. All classes take place at Birkbeck College (Bloomsbury campus) and students have full access to library facilities.
