Course programme

Year 1

Master the basics. Start your journey through Creative Computing (Animation) by developing key skills in computing and digital design. We provide an induction to computer science (binary, hardware, operating systems, networking) and probe the social and ethical consequences that are distinct to the digital age. Weekly tech workshops expose you to the basics of web development, physical computing (Arduino, Raspberry Pi) and object-oriented programming. Specific modules on creative problem solving, interface design and coding for the visual arts enrich your understanding of how creativity and computing combine.

Indicative modules:

  • CodeLab I (Java and HTML5 programming primer)
  • Digital Practice (non-linear storytelling)
  • Visual Coding (coding for the visual arts)
  • Introduction to Computing (computer science fundamentals)
  • Interface Design (visual / UX design for devices)
  • Ideation and Creative Problem Solving (find new ways of solving problems)

Year 2

Begin to specialise. We teach you principles of animation and digital storytelling, through reviewing compelling content and a set of experimental skills workshops. You’ll encounter practical aspects of 2D / 3D asset creation, keyframing, blocking and lines of action, while also considering the creative strategies and marketing decisions deployed by commercial animation studios. Your animation specific learning is accompanied with an in-depth ‘code lab’ that spotlights the C programming languages. Elective modules provide space to improve programming literacy, interface with creative companies, and experiment with some of the latest consumer grade interactive devices.

Indicative modules:

  • CodeLab II (extend your programming skills to C++)
  • Digital Animation (a practical introduction to the field)
  • Web and Mobile Application Development (databases and responsive web apps)
  • Emerging Technologies (experiment with and ideate on new-to-market tech)
  • Industry-Informed Projects (work on live briefs set by industry partners)

Year 3

Kickstart your career. You’ll enhance your software development knowledge, while setting yourself up for success in the tech / creative industries. One third of your time is spent developing a significant digital artefact. This work becomes the centrepiece of a compelling, industry-focused creative portfolio. You’ll gain expert insight into software project management techniques and best practice. Here you negotiate the selection and application of novel creative computing technologies and strategies within major software development projects. Optional modules target interdisciplinary collaboration, professional development and enterprise engagement.

Indicative modules:

  • Practice-based Project (pursue a large-scale personal work)
  • Animation Studio (extend your animation skills into 3D)
  • Software Project Management (how to lead large software projects)
  • Professional Practice with Industry Placements (work experience with an industry partner)

Course assessment

Creative Computing (Animation) is almost entirely coursework assessed. You’ll deliver a varied and balanced collection of artefacts including showreels, experiment portfolios, prototype software, interactive stories, digital interfaces and web apps. Project work is supported by contextual essays, reflective commentaries, sketchbooks, reports, pitches, presentations, debates and b/vlogs.
