Course programme

Year 1

As well as the core of BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Statistics you will take a data analytics module where you will study sophisticated analytics techniques to visualize Big Data using software such as R. These will be applied to database interrogation, social network visualization and sentiment analysis.

Study a range of modules including linear regression and Monte Carlo methods. You’ll also learn how to use statistical and mathematical techniques to evaluate financial problems (such as value at risk, bankruptcies, takeovers, cost of capital, share prices, dividends, and capital asset pricing). This year also provides you with skills in operational research, the mathematical techniques underlying management and decision making.

Final year

You will study data modelling topics equipping you with the analytical skills needed by business and industry, together with predictive analytics for forecasting financial data and optimisation for efficient decision making. You will study optimisation. You may undertake a series of mini-projects on analytics topics or work with an analytics expert on a project of your choice such as Big Data or social media sentiment analysis.
