The BSc (Hons) Public Health with Foundation Year is designed to help you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed in your studies with the University of Wolverhampton at degree level and beyond. During your Foundation Year you will develop skills appropriate to University study such as finding and using information, working collaboratively with others, challenging and debating ideas and expressing yourself with greater confidence.

Public health saves lives. The discipline has always had a major role in preventing health problems, and protecting the health of the nation, and is more relevant now than ever.  Increasing government attention is focussed on improving population health, as demonstrated in current policy. Much emphasis is placed on tackling the underlying causes of ill-health, promoting health and well-being, and addressing health inequalites. 

Many agencies now having public health responsibilities; this is opening up new opportunities for innovative approaches. It also brings the need for a well-prepared public health workforce, able to work flexibly across many disciplines and demonstrate a wide range of abilities. This course is specifically designed to fulfil this need.

About this course

This course will enable you to gain an understanding of the multi-disciplinary approaches to Public Health. As a Public Health student you will develop the knowledge and skills necessary for the assimilation and understanding of the complex and diverse nature of the subject, as well as more general skills which will be widely transferable, enabling you to effectively prepare for and to establish a career in a wide range of public health related areas.

 A range of modules will be studied, some alongside other health and social care students, which will broaden your understanding of Public Health, and provide you with opportunities for inter-disciplinary learning.

Foundation and Principles of Public Health introduces major concepts and principles for modern Public Health practice. Students will learn about the key aspects underpinning Public Health at local and international levels. At local level, the Public Health Knowledge and Skills Framework will be examined to help develop understanding of the required knowledge, core skills and competencies to practice effective Public Health in the UK as well as developing understanding of the range of public health roles and career opportunities. At the international level, students will be exposed to global health policies and interventions. Evidence-based public health is a pre-requisite in modern Public Health practice; student will therefore be learning about the role of data, how to identify and evaluate data/evidence for use in practice. The ethical issues underlying public health policy and interventions today will also be discussed. In addition, students will gain basic team working skills as part of collaborative working in groups.

In public health, communication skills and understanding the techniques that you can use to communicate effectively are essential to disseminate simple as well as complex health issues and advice to both individuals and large populations. This module will provide you with a clear background to communication theories, models of communication, and education theory, as well as an examination of key theoretical themes and perspectives on health communication. As well as providing you with an insight into the theoretical frameworks for effective communication by integrating ideas from educational theory and the study of communication techniques into the specific context of health promotion, it will also include discussions around new and emerging social media as well as social marketing techniques. You will also have the opportunity to develop practical skills in communicating with individuals, groups and other health professionals.

This module introduces you to the key concepts, theories and models in the discipline of Health Psychology. Health Psychology is concerned with the study of psychological processes in health, illness and healthcare. Health Psychologists study the behavioural factors that are associated with staying healthy, as well as exploring how people who are ill can be helped to adapt to, or recover from, their illness. You will be introduced to 4 main areas of Health Psychology: the prevention and management of illness; the identification of psychological factors contributing to physical illness; the promotion and maintenance of health; and the use of Health Psychology research to inform interventions. On successful completion of the module, you will be able to critically evaluate how Health Psychology theory and research has aided our understanding of the influences on health-related behaviour, and how psychological and physiological processes are associated with ill health. You will be encouraged to apply Health Psychology to real world examples. The assignment seeks to develop your capacity to use Health Psychology to both analyse a significant current public health topic and to provide an evidence-based intervention to address this topic.
