Course programme

BTEC Award Applied Law
This two year course is designed to provide a specialist, work-orientated qualification. The course aims to give students the opportunity to develop that range of skills/techniques, and attitudes, essential to facilitate access to employment opportunities within the legal/business fields by providing its students with the knowledge, understanding and skills which employers would seek.

What will I study on this course?
The structure of the BTEC National Award qualification provides for the study of three core units: Dispute solving, Understanding law-making and Aspects of legal liability. Beyond these core units lie specialist units from which students might be able to choose a further three units out of four to study.

Aspects of property offences and police powers: Was the accused actually being dishonest when he/she borrowed 25 from the till?

Contract law: Just what types of agreement are enforceable in a court oflaw?

Consumer law: What are your legal entitlements when something you have bought simply doesnt work?

Aspects of the law of tort: What can you do when someone has caused you serious personal injury, such that you are unable to work for at least two years?

Understanding aspects of employment law: Do you have any rights after being dismissed from your employment?

Aspects of Family law: How do marital and cohabitation rights compare?

How is this course assessed?
Assessment is entirely by way of student based learning, by their undertaking a variety of assignments, projects or case studies, practical activities or possibly relevant work experience. You might even find yourself participating in a mock trial! The content of the course readily lends itself to both group work and team work.
There are no examinations.

What kind of student will do well on this course?
This course is designed with those students in mind who would like to find out more about the law and legal system, and who would prefer to follow a programme of learning that does not involve any form of assessment by way of a written examination at the end of a unit or academic year.
