Course programme

This course is designed to develop skills that will prepare successful students for careers in Computing and Business. Opportunities will exist to explore topics in both areas and learners will be asked to elect a pathway of specialisation.

You need to have gained at least one of the following:

Five GCSEs at grade C to include Double Science, English and Maths

BTEC First Certificate or Diploma (Merit or above) in a related subject with a recommendation from your coordinator

Intermediate GNVQ(Merit or above) in a related subject

You must present proof of the entry qualifications in order to enrol. Conditional offers will be made based on predicted grades.

Applicants will be required to attend, and successfully complete, a formal interview and assessment with Departmental staff which will assess their suitability for the course. At the end of the selection process you may be asked to complete preparatory material as a requirement of admission.

When you attend for interview you will be asked to bring some evidence of your work prior to this course which demonstrates an interest in computing studies and topics.

If you are using (or intend to use) entry qualifications gained through a course studied at the Isle of Wight College you will have to provide a reference from a senior member of staff in the department where you gained the qualification.

This is a level 3, advanced course. Achievement at Distinction grades attracts 360 UCAS points (equivalent to 3 A levels).

A BTEC National Diploma is a practical, work-related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about the employment area you have chosen, you develop the skills you need to start a career. When you have finished the course you can choose whether to get a job straight away or go into higher education first.

The course is unit based. There are six core units and twelve additional units covered in the two year programme. Assessment is by assignment except in the case of selected Vendor (E.g. Cisco) units which have an exam.

BTEC National Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education institutions (universities and colleges).

Students go into careers in many IT related disciplines as technicians and technical support and progress to professional status in their chosen field.

If you want to get a job straight away you could work in:

Business system management

Management information systems

Business Programming

If you decide on university or college you could take a degree or a BTEC Higher National in subjects such as:

Artificial Intelligence

IT Practitioners

It is expected that demand for places on this course will be very high. You must complete the application form for full-time courses and submit it as early as possible. You will be invited for an interview with a department staff member in the College where you will be able to ask additional questions.

You will take part in a set of simple assessments that will be designed to assess your current skills so that we can provide learning that best meets your own needs.
