About this course

You will need at least 4 GCSEs in the C-E range, preferably to include two at grade C or above or an appropriate Level 1 qualification such as a BTEC Introductory Certificate or Diploma, a NVQ Level 1 or a CACHE Foundation Award.

This course has been designed specifically to provide you with the
qualifications you need to work with children, or for anyone who finds the early years subject interesting.

The BTEC First Diploma in Children†s Care, Learning and Development is made up of six units all of which must be completed to achieve the qualification. You will study a range of core and specialist units.

The core units may include:

· Understanding children†s development
· Communication with children and adults
· Professional development, roles and responsibilities in childcare.

The specialist units include:

· Supporting children†s play and learning
· The development and care of babies and young children under three years

· Providing support for children with disabilities or special educational
needs.

An important part of this course is the completion of a minimum of 300 hours early years placement in a nursery or similar setting. You will be given the opportunity to achieve additional qualifications alongside your main course. These will include qualifications in Functional Skills and first aid. You will participate in a practical three-day residential course to develop individual and team skills.

How will I be assessed?
This qualification is assessed via coursework, which includes projects, assignments, presentations and practical activities. The reports from your work placements will be assessed by your tutors.

On successful completion you may:

Progress to a Level 2 BTEC First Diploma in Children†s Care, Learning and Development or another Level 2 course in a different subject area, such as the BTEC First Diploma in
Health and Social Care.

Or

Start an exciting career in early years or care, under the supervision of a more senior early year†s practitioner. Achieving this course will give you the equivalent of 4 GCSEs at
grades C-E.
